Frequently Asked Questions
These are the most common questions asked by NoteDex users, drawn from hundreds of real support conversations.
Trial & Billing
Do I need a credit card to start the free trial?
No. The 7-day free trial requires no credit card. You sign up and start using NoteDex immediately, with no payment details needed.
Will I be charged automatically when the trial ends?
No. NoteDex does not auto-charge you at the end of the trial. You will only be billed if you actively choose to purchase a subscription or lifetime license. There is no need to "cancel" the free trial. This is unlike most subscriptions on the Apple or Google store that force you into signing up and auto-billing after the trial. We do not do that.
What happens when the free trial ends?
The app enters a restricted mode — you can still view all your existing cards and stacks, but you cannot add new cards until you purchase a license.
How do I purchase NoteDex?
- Log in to NoteDex on the web at https://notedex.app or in the app.
- During the trial, look for the "Click Here to Save 50% Today" banner at the top of the Home page. After the trial it will say "Buy to Add Cards".

- Click it to see the purchase options: monthly, annual, or lifetime.
- On Windows/Web, payment is handled by Stripe (credit/debit card, and discount codes accepted).
- On iOS/Mac or Android, payment is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play.
> Note: Discount codes can only be used via the Web — they cannot be applied in the App Store or Google Play purchases.
Is there a student discount?
Yes — a 50% EDU discount is available for students and educators. Verify your student status via the pricing page at https://www.notedexapp.com/plans-and-pricing and purchase through the web to apply the discount.
What is the lifetime licence?
A one-time payment that gives you permanent access to NoteDex on all your devices. The price is linked to your login account. Check the current pricing at https://www.notedexapp.com/plans-and-pricing — limited-time pricing applies.
The Purchase button isn't doing anything — what should I do?
Try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache. If that doesn't help, try a different browser, or use the direct link at https://www.notedexapp.com/plans-and-pricing. If the issue persists, contact support.
How do I cancel my subscription?
- Windows/Web: Click your name (**Hi NoteDex**) in the top-right → Customer Portal → cancel from the Stripe billing page.
- iOS/Mac: Cancel via Apple ID → Subscriptions.
- Android: Cancel via Google Play → Subscriptions.
After cancellation, your data is retained for up to 1 year.
How do I delete my account entirely?
Click Hi NoteDex (your name) in the top-right → Request Account Deletion. This cancels your subscription and permanently deletes all your data. Export a CSV backup first if you want to keep anything.
Getting Started & Login
How do I sign up?
Go to https://notedex.app and click Try for Free or Log In (both go to the same page). You can sign in with an existing Google, Microsoft, or Apple account, or create a NoteDex account with your email and a password.
My trial isn't starting / I'm stuck on the sign-up screen — what do I do?
If you signed up with email and password, make sure you completed all the steps:
1. Entered your email and clicked Send Verification Code.
2. Received the code in your email and typed it in.
3. Clicked Verify Code (it should say "Email address verified").
4. Entered your password and clicked Create.
Once complete, the Welcome screen appears and your 7-day trial begins. If you're still stuck, try logging in directly at https://notedex.app.
Can I use NoteDex without an internet connection (offline)?
Yes — once you have loaded NoteDex in your browser or app, basic viewing works offline. You can also create new simple notes when offline - handy if you are on a plane etc. Once online you will click on the Drafts icon and select which 'draft cards' you want to make into real NoteDex cards.
Is the web app the same as the desktop app?
Yes. The web app at notedex.app is fully featured and nearly identical to the desktop experience. You do not need to download anything to use all of NoteDex's key features. However the desktop experience has additional nice features like 'Quick Note' and additional AI features.
Download links for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android are also available at https://notedexapp.com/downloads.
I was a previous Index Cards user — can I migrate my data?
Yes. Log in to NoteDex using the same account credentials you used for Index Cards. Your previous cards will be visible in read-only mode, and there is an in-app option to extract the text and convert them into full NoteDex cards.
How do I contact support?
Click the ? icon at the bottom of the left sidebar, or visit the support chat on the NoteDex website. You can also email via the contact form at https://notedexapp.com.
Cards & Notes
What is a Card, a Stack, and a Workspace?
- A Card is an individual note (like a 3×5 index card) — it can contain text, images, drawings, tables, and links. Every card has a front and a back.
- A Stack is a collection of cards — like a notebook or folder.
- A Workspace is a collection of stacks — used to separate different areas of your life or work.
The hierarchy is: Workspace → Stack → Card.
How do I create a card?
From the Home page: click Add New Card [+] in the top bar, then choose which stack it goes into from the dropdown.
From inside a stack: click Add New Card [+] in the top bar — it's automatically added to that stack.
How do I add data to the back of a card?
Click the flip icon (circular arrow) on the right side of the card when in Desktop view, or below the card on mobile. The icon turns blue to show you are on the back. Type your content there. The status line shows "Back of Card 1 of X".
How do I delete a card?
- From the card thumbnail: click the card menu in the grid → ... → Delete.
- From inside the card: click ... in the card toolbar → Delete.
To delete multiple cards at once, use Multi Select.
How do I add an image to a card?
Click the Image icon in the card toolbar (top of the card). Browse to your image file to insert it.
You can also right-click an image on any webpage and choose Copy, then right-click inside the card body and Paste — NoteDex will paste the image directly.
Once inserted, drag the image to reposition it and drag the corner to resize it.
Can I adjust line spacing?
Yes — there is a line spacing icon in the text formatting bar. You can switch between single, 1.5×, and double spacing in the card body.
How do I add a hyperlink to a card?
Click the hyperlink icon in the text formatting bar, or paste a URL directly into the card body — NoteDex auto-detects URLs. To edit a link you've added, click it and use the Edit icon that appears.
How do I reorder cards within a stack?
Drag and drop card thumbnails to a new position — a blank card shows where the card will land. You can also use ... → Move Card Up / Move Card Down on any card thumbnail.
> Tip: If drag-and-drop isn't working, make sure you're in Standard View (not Organizer View). Check your view selector in the filter bar.
Also check settings to ensure you have set slider Touch Mode' to 'OFF' - to drag cards in the window on desktop using a mouse. Touch mode is designed to be a better experience when using your finger to swipe the Cards view when using a tablet like an iPad. Then the page scrolls. In certain cases for example if you are on a Microsoft Surface, the setting might be set to OFF yet you are trying to scroll with your finger, and you'll find you keep moving cards by accident. This is when you should go into settings and set Touch Mode to ON.
How do I rename a stack?
Click the stack name text below its thumbnail on the Home page — it becomes editable. Type the new name and press Enter.
How do I delete a stack?
Hover over the stack menu in the top-right of the stack → click ... → Delete. This permanently deletes the stack and all its cards.
How do I delete a workspace?
Open the workspace dropdown (top-left) → Add/Edit Workspaces → find the workspace you want to remove and delete it. Note: the Home workspace cannot be deleted.
Organization — Groups, Tags & Views
What is the difference between Groups and Tags?
- Groups are fixed sub-folders within a stack — like chapters or sections. A card belongs to one group.
- Tags are labels you can apply to any card. A card can have multiple tags, and you can filter by tag across a stack. Tags can be local (stack-only) or global (across all stacks).
How do I put a card into a group?
Click ... on any card thumbnail → Move To Group → select the group. You can also drag the card in Organizer View if you are viewing Groups as Rows or Columns.
How do I create a new group?
Click Add Group in the left panel when inside a stack. Type a name and the group is created.
How do I use the Organizer View (Kanban board)?
Switch from Standard View to Organizer View using the dropdown in the filter bar. You can then arrange your cards as groups-as-columns (Kanban), groups-as-rows (storyboard), or by tags.
Printing & Export
How do I print my cards?
NoteDex prints by exporting to PDF first, then printing from your PDF viewer:
- Open the stack you want to print.
- In the Cards View, click ... (top-right) → the save/export icon.
- Choose Export as PDF.
- Select your layout options (see below).
- The PDF opens in a preview window where you can open it and print.
Alternatively, from the Home page, hover over a stack → ... → Export Stack as PDF.
What PDF layout options are available?
| Option | What it produces |
|---|---|
| Front only | Just the front of each card |
| Both sides | Front and back, alternating pages (print double‑sided) |
| Avery 5388 | Formatted for Avery index card paper — 3 per page, ready to cut |
| With borders | Adds a border around each card |
| 2×2 layout | 4 cards per page — great for a compact reference sheet |
| 3×3 layout | 9 cards per page — good for a storyboard overview |
More layouts keep being added so the list you see maybe more than the above.
Can I export my cards as image files?
Yes — in the Cards View, click ... → export icon → Save as ZIP of Images. This creates a ZIP file containing one image per card — useful for importing into PowerPoint or Keynote.
You can also export a single card as an image: click ... on a card thumbnail → Export Card as Image or
Copy Card as Image.
Can I export my data as a text file?
Yes — from the export menu in Cards View you can Save as Text (.txt) to get all the text content of your cards.
For a full CSV export of all your data (across all stacks), go to Settings → Download CSV Export.
Sharing
How do I share a stack with someone?
Hover over the stack on the Home page → ... → Share to Web. This generates a unique URL you can copy and send. You can also set a password, an expiry date, and control whether recipients can edit the cards. Recipients do not need a NoteDex account to view.
Can I share a single card?
Yes — open the card, then click the Share icon in the card toolbar. You get a link for that card only, with the same password and expiry options.
Can I share an entire workspace?
Yes — on the Home page, click the share icon next to the workspace dropdown. Toggle sharing on, copy the link, and optionally set a password and expiry date.
Importing Data
Can I import cards from Excel or another app?
Yes — NoteDex has a Text Import feature. Prepare your data as a CSV file with 5 columns: Title, Front, Back, Group, Tag . Then:
- Open the stack you want to import into.
- Click ... (top-right) → Text Import icon.
- Click Import CSV to select your file.
- Check the data in the grid — you can edit rows before importing.
- Click Create Cards to generate all the cards.
Are there pre-made flashcard packs I can download?
Not currently — there is no built-in library of pre-made flashcard packs. However, you can create your own cards quickly using the AI Assistant (wand icon) — just type something like "Create a stack of Spanish vocabulary flashcards" and the AI will generate them for you.
Syncing & Data
My cards aren't showing up on another device — what do I do?
Make sure you are:
1. Signed in with the same account on both devices (same provider — don't mix Google on one device and Microsoft on another).
2. Connected to the internet on both devices.
3. Try clicking the Refresh (sync) icon in the top-right of the Home page.
4. If data still looks out of date, go to Settings → Re-Sync NoteDex data to force a full sync.
Can I back up my data?
Yes — go to Settings → Download CSV Export. This downloads all your card text (title, front, back, group, tags) as a CSV file. Note that images and drawings are not included in the CSV export.
